Mitchell received his PhD in 1988 from Stony Brook University and was a post-doctoral fellow in the European Union, called the European Community at the time, with intra-EC postings at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the University of Barcelona and The University of Oxford for 2 years. He followed this with a 2 year NSF Post-Doctoral Fellowship at Michigan State University and the Huxley Instructorship at Rice University. Mitchell moved to Flinders University in 1992 to start the marine biology program. He has continued there since, with the exception of 8 months in 2003-2004, when he accepted a tenured position at the University of Tokyo. He became Deputy Head of Biological Sciences in 2006 and was Head of Biological Sciences from March 2007 to July 2010. From 2012 to 2014 he was a member of the Australian Research Council’s Biology and Biotechnology College and chair of that College in 2014. He has been a visiting scientist at the University of British Columbia; University California, San Diego; Pennsylvania State University and Harvard University.  Since his time at Flinders University, Mitchell has supervised 58 Honours students and 32 PhD students.
